How can we get to stay in the Cook Islands for longer than 6 months? Check with the tourist authority or the Business Trade and Investment Board for available options.
Can we buy land in the Cook Islands? You can buy land in the Cook Islands if you have the permission of the Development Investment Board (www.cookislands-invest.com) to stay here and operate an approved business or profession.
Is there any freehold land? No. All land is leasehold. Term of lease is up to 60 years. Leases can generally be renegotiated to the full 60 years upon payment of an agreed sum of money to the landowners.
What happens if a lease is not renegotiated and runs its full 60 years? The property and its improvements revert to the landowner who may keep it or sell a new lease.
